Wild Camping in Britain – A VW Camper’s Guide to Legal Spots and Etiquette

There’s something magical about waking up in your VW camper to unobstructed views of the Lake District fells or the sound of waves lapping against a secluded Scottish beach. Wild camping (or “freedom camping” as our European neighbours call it) is one of the greatest joys of camper van ownership – when done properly.

Know the Law

Let’s get the legal bits sorted first, because nobody wants a 5am knock from an irate landowner or worse, the police.

Scotland: You’ve struck gold north of the border. The Right to Roam legislation means you can camp almost anywhere, as long as you’re not on private property or being a nuisance. Stick to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code: camp in small numbers, away from buildings, and leave no trace.

England and Wales: Technically, wild camping is only legal on Dartmoor (and even that’s being challenged in courts). However, many landowners turn a blind eye to respectful overnight parking, especially if you’re discrete and don’t outstay your welcome.

The Grey Areas: Forestry Commission car parks, some National Trust properties, and certain council-owned car parks don’t explicitly prohibit overnight stays. Use common sense, arrive late, leave early, and don’t set up camp chairs and awnings.

Our Favourite (Legal) Spots

After years of exploring in our own vans, here are some gems that welcome responsible camper vanners:

The Trossachs, Scotland: Loch Katrine’s car park offers stunning sunrise views over the water. Facilities are basic, but the scenery more than compensates.

Borrowdale, Lake District: While wild camping isn’t technically legal, several farms offer basic overnight stops for £10-15. Try Stonethwaite Farm – they’re camper van friendly and the location’s spectacular.

Pembrokeshire Coast: Freshwater East Beach car park is a favourite among the VW community. Arrive after 6pm, pay the overnight fee, and you’re sorted for magnificent coastal sunrise views.

Exmoor: Several car parks on the moor allow overnight parking. Dunkery Beacon car park puts you right at England’s highest point in the southwest.

The Unwritten Rules

Arrive Late, Leave Early: Rock up after 6pm and be packed up by 9am. This minimises disruption and shows respect for day users.

Leave No Trace: Pack out everything you pack in. Use your van’s facilities rather than popping behind bushes. Grey water should go down proper drains, not onto the ground.

Buy Local: If you’re staying near a village, pop into the local shop or pub. Tourism pounds help keep rural communities alive.

Don’t Overstay: One night maximum unless explicitly told otherwise. You’re a visitor, not a resident.

Size Matters: Single vans are generally more welcome than convoys. Travel in smaller groups and spread out if camping together.

Essential Kit for Wild Camping

Your VW should be self-sufficient for at least 2-3 days. That means:

  • Adequate fresh water (minimum 40 litres for a couple)
  • Sufficient waste water capacity
  • 12V compressor fridge to avoid ice runs
  • Solar panel or good leisure battery setup
  • Portable cassette toilet (even if you prefer facilities)
  • LED exterior lighting that won’t drain your battery
  • OS maps and GPS backup – phone signals can be patchy

Weather Windows

British weather can turn quickly, especially in exposed locations. Always check forecasts and have backup plans. We’ve seen too many T5s stuck in Lake District car parks because owners ignored weather warnings.

High pressure systems typically offer the best conditions – settled weather, clear skies, and lighter winds. Avoid camping in valleys during foggy conditions, and never park where flash floods could be an issue.

Respect the Community

The wild camping community largely self-regulates through mutual respect and shared values. Poor behaviour by a few can ruin access for everyone. We’ve already lost several previously welcoming spots due to inconsiderate camping.

If you witness irresponsible behaviour, politely intervene if safe to do so. We’re all ambassadors for the lifestyle, and preserving access depends on maintaining high standards.
