Habitation Check
Campervan Safety Checks
Keeping up to date with annual Habitation Checks can reduce the potential for unforeseen defects as and when you need your campervan most.
There is a lot going on in a modern day campervan, you have 12v electrics, 240v electrics, gas and water systems, a fridge, hob, possibly a grill or oven, solar chargers and more. Each need to have been installed correctly and working as they should to provide a safe environment. That’s why an annual habitation check is of importance.
But what is a habitation safety check?
The simplest way to look at a Habitation check (or Campervan safety check) is that it is like an MOT for the conversion. A Habitation Check can be conducted at any time of year, in fact we advise avoiding Spring / Summer as this is a particularly busy time.
The cost for our Habitation Check is:
A damp check is not undertaken on a van based campervan as unlike a motorhome, there are no seams into which water could ingress.
Do I need a habitation check?
Whilst not a legal requirement, unless renting your campervan out, we would advise that a Habitation Check be conducted on an annual basis.
It is a way of checking that all the facilities in your camper are working as they should and are safe to use. Certainly, all the VW campervans we sell leave us with a fresh Habitation Certificate in place.
Habitation checks should only be carried out by Approved Workshop engineers.
They differ from simpler gas safe checks in that the engineer is qualified to test and work on all the gas, water and electrical systems that are found in a conversion.
Once completed and a pass achieved, they will issue a certificate of safety.
Who is Approved Workshop?
The Approved Workshop Scheme is a joint enterprise between the NCC (National Caravan Council), The Caravan and Motorhome Club and The Camping and Caravanning Club. It’s engineers have to be ACOPS Gas qualified, have a City & Guilds in Caravan Engineering and be an Approved Workshop member.
What do I receive?
Once the check has been completed and your campervan has passed, you will receive a habitation safety certificate. This states that on the day of the test all appliances were operational and safe to use.
Our checks go further than most as we conduct a room Carbon Monoxide (CO) test whereby the heating is operated for 20 minutes and the air circulating around the living accommodation measured for CO.
This tests for CO emissions in parts per million PPM. Our cut off is 5, anything 6 and higher would be flagged for further investigation. A carbon monoxide detector triggers at 150ppm.
If any issues are detected during the check, we can quote for these to be rectified at a competitive rate.
Habitation Checks take around 90 minutes to complete and can be done while you wait if prebooked.
