Danbury Campervan Conversions
The name Danbury has been linked to VW campervans as far back as 1964. Probably still best known for their VW Type 2 campervan conversions, the Danbury brand continues to exist today, although has passed through a few owners along the way. They had something of a resurgence with the Brazilian T2 camper with exclusive rights to build retro looking VW campers on brand new T2 Transporters made in Brazil.
Around the same time they also started converting on the T5 Transporter and later the T6. In 2014 VW ceased production of the Brazilian T2 campers for good and in late 2020 the Danbury brand was sold to VW campervan conversion company Vanworx. You can still buy brand new Danbury campervans today, although at the time of writing the range is reduced to the Surf and more basic Trail.

Danbury Surf
The Danbury Surf was available in two guises both around the traditional layout of full length furniture behind the driver and bed across the rear of the camper. The standard Danbury Surf has a two seater rear bed, whilst the Surf King had a wider three seater rear bed and slimline furniture. Both featured a fridge with curved tambour door and a good sized hob and grill, along with lots of practical storage.
Danbury Active
Like most larger scale conversion companies, Danbury offered an alternative layout to the traditional Surf in the form of the Danbury Active. This conversion had a central lounge which converted to two single beds, with rear galley kitchen and toilet. Available in LWB and SWB format, with a rear lifting pop-top roof the Danbury Active could also be specified as a 2-berth or 4-berth camper.
Danbury Royale
The Danbury Royale has essentially the same layout as the Active but was produced exclusively on a LWB platform. This meant that it could have the three zones of lounge / bedroom, leading to kitchen and then the rear toilet / washroom. Unlike other convertors, Danbury offered this larger Royale model in both high-top and po-top configurations, although we suspect most Danbury Royales were hi-tops.
